What Is a Rapid Rescore?

Short answer

A rapid rescore is a request your mortgage lender sends, through its credit reporting vendor, to update your credit report with proof of a recent change, such as a paid-down card, often within 2 to 5 days instead of the 30 to 60 days creditors normally take to report (Experian, as of October 2026). You cannot order one yourself. It can only reflect accurate, documented updates; it cannot remove accurate negative history.

Definition

An expedited update of one or more credit bureau records, requested by a mortgage lender with supporting documents, followed by a new credit score pull for the loan file.

Worked example

Example only, not a promised score: your card has a $4,500 balance on a $5,000 limit, 90% used. You pay it down to $500, 10% used. Your lender sends the bank's updated statement for a rapid rescore and pulls new scores a few days later. If the higher score crosses a pricing or program threshold, the loan terms may change, subject to credit approval.

How it works

  • Your loan officer reviews your report and finds a change that may help, like paying a card below a lower balance
  • You make the payment and get written proof: an updated statement, a paid-in-full letter or a payment confirmation
  • The lender submits the proof through its credit vendor to the bureaus
  • The bureaus update the account, and the lender pulls a new score, often within 2 to 5 days per Experian

Per Experian, the lender cannot pass the rescore fee directly to you, though costs can show up indirectly in pricing (as of October 2026).

What it can and cannot do

  • Can: show a lower card balance, a paid-off collection or a corrected error you have documented
  • Cannot: erase accurate late payments, collections or a bankruptcy. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, most accurate negative items can be reported for 7 years and bankruptcies for up to 10 (CFPB)
  • May backfire: paying off an installment loan can briefly lower a score, per Experian, so ask before you pay

Lower card balances can also lower your DTI, because the minimum payment drops.

In South Florida

In a fast Miami purchase with a set closing date, a rapid rescore can help when a few points decide whether you qualify for a program or a better pricing tier. Beware of credit repair offers: the CFPB says no one can remove accurate negative information, and you can dispute real errors yourself for free.

Can I request a rapid rescore myself?

No. Only a mortgage lender can request it through its credit vendor. You can dispute errors directly with the bureaus, but that follows the normal timeline.

How long does a rapid rescore take?

Often 2 to 5 days after the lender submits documents, according to Experian.

Will a rapid rescore raise my score?

Not necessarily. It only updates the data; the scoring model decides the result. Your lender can often run a what-if analysis first.

Can it remove a late payment?

Only if the late payment was reported in error and the creditor documents the correction. Accurate late payments stay.
